At Mood Lifters, we don’t believe it is your fault if you have anxiety or depression. However, we do believe there are strategies you can learn that will help you to get and stay well. Wellness is more than a lack of disease. It takes time and effort to develop a positive, robust and full life. We’re here to help you learn the tools and strategies you need. Let’s do this!
Mood Lifters Has 3 Key Weekly Components
1. Check in with the group leader
Before each meeting begins, we will ask you to fill in brief questionnaire so we can track your improvements over time. We will also review points earned over the prior week, discuss any barriers you may have experienced, and answer any questions you may have.
We introduce a new topic each week in one of 6 categories (sleep, body, thoughts, behaviors, emotions or relationships). We discuss the research behind each topic and explore strategies for incorporating that research into your daily life.
Example topics include: sleep strategies, the importance of exercise, improving relationships, controlling your emotions, changing your negative thoughts and increasing joy and contentment.
Points are earned by participating in activities related to the topic of each meeting. Each activity is assigned points. The ultimate goal is for you to turn the strategies you learn in the Mood Lifters meetings into healthy habits. As with any new skill, participants will need to practice these new strategies in order to master them. Our data strongly suggests that successfully adopting these habits will lead to a happier and healthier life.

“On the advent of me getting my life back, I want to thank you for being a Mood Lifter Leader/Member and Creator. Mood Lifters has changed my life in a short four months. The notion of accountability really resonates with me, having had a Major Depression diagnosis 30 years ago. So much has changed since the late 80’s. Mood Lifters has helped me overcome another bout of depression. It is my second episode. The first one was for my first 37 years on the planet. Self Talk was a key concept for me. With Mood Lifters, Mindfulness, Self Talk and reading Thomas Merton books, I am back to normal for me, which is wonderful. I have no intention being like I was earlier in life and I know where to seek help, when the need arises. […] You achieved greatness by creating and developing Mood Lifters.”
“There have been a variety of “mood lifting” tools that have entered my life’s journey. Most have been beneficial to some degree or another. When I learned about Mood Lifters from my mom, I was intrigued. When I learned about Mood Lifters from going through it myself, I saw improvement! Now, my brother is journeying through Mood Lifters, also!”
“What is the benefit of Mood Lifters? There are three keys: Simple, Personal, Accountable. Simple: the research-based tools are simple. They cover the gamut of life’s experiences and our holistic needs as human beings. Each week there are simple activities to practice and do. Simplicity helps me feel that I can succeed…then I want to challenge myself to go further! Personal: The goals I set (key word: I) are what I find important for my life. The simple exercises become meaningful when I adapt them to my life, my goals, my abilities and interests! Accountable: This is a key component and yet with Mood Lifters it retains its characteristic simplicity. I choose the goals, and I choose the points earned. Writing them down and turning-in some account of my week helps reinforce the value of the exercises. The weekly group meetings are educational and encouraging. The weekly point-tracking sheets are my way of saying, Yes, this is important. I may not have accomplished all my goals, but I haven’t stopped. I’m here, and I will continue making my health, my mood, myself a value!”
Anyone who is age 18 and older, who is not actively psychotic, suicidal, or manic is welcome to participate.
Mood Lifters is a currently a 15 week program. However, in time, more modules will be developed and the program will last indefinitely.
Participants are asked to participate in additional activities at home. These are specifically designed to establish healthy habits and coping strategies in each of the areas discussed during the meetings.
Participants are encouraged to attend all meetings if possible, but we understand that conflicts may arise. Program leaders can provide participants with meeting materials and information on missed meetings.
Meetings are scheduled at a variety of times. We currently have meetings taking place in the morning, midday, and evening.
Each meeting is approximately one hour long. Time is provided at the end of each meeting to ask questions.
Each group will have approximately 8-15 participants.
At the beginning of each meeting, participants answer questions about mood, physical health, and relationships. These answers are tracked over the week to monitor changes in the participants’ physical and emotional well-being.
Yes. Mood Lifters can be an excellent addition to your current mental health treatment. Just let us and your current provider know you are participating in both.
The cost depends on where you are participating in Mood Lifters. Anyone participating through a workplace program should check with their employer. For individuals who would like to sign up directly the cost is $50/month.
The vast majority of the research on peer leaders have shown that peer-led groups are as effective as professional lead groups. Further, Mood Lifters has tested peer-led against professional-led sessions and preliminary results support that there are no statistically significant differences between Mood Lifters groups led by professionals and Mood Lifters groups led by trained peers. Mood Lifters is a structured program developed by leading experts in the field and the program is based on cutting edge research and standardized across all leaders who are required to meet specific qualifications. Finally, group leaders always have an option to seek support from Mood Lifters professional staff for questions or issues that they feel are beyond their training.
