Mood Lifters Has 3 Key Weekly Components

1. Check in

Before each meeting begins, we will ask you to fill in brief questionnaire so we can track your improvements over time. We will also review points earned over the prior week, discuss any barriers you may have experienced, and answer any questions you may have.

2. Meetings

We introduce a new topic each week in one of 6 categories (sleep, body, thoughts, behaviors, emotions or relationships). We discuss the research behind each topic and explore strategies for incorporating that research into your daily life. Example topics include: sleep strategies, the importance of exercise, improving relationships, controlling your emotions, changing your negative thoughts and increasing joy and contentment.

3. Points

Points are earned by participating in activities related to the topic of each meeting. Each activity is assigned points. The ultimate goal is for you to turn the strategies you learn in the Mood Lifters meetings into healthy habits. As with any new skill, participants will need to practice these new strategies in order to master them. Our data strongly suggests that successfully adopting these habits will lead to a happier and healthier life.

Does It Work?

Mood Lifters has been shown to be highly effective in treatment studies. Data from a randomized control trial suggest that Mood lifters participants decrease their levels of anxiety and depression and increase their feelings of happiness. Participants sleep better and feel more powerful.

Mood Lifters is a currently a 15 week program. However, in time, more modules will be developed and the program will last indefinitely.

Participants are asked to participate in additional activities at home. These are specifically designed to establish healthy habits and coping strategies in each of the areas discussed during the meetings.

Participants are encouraged to attend all meetings if possible, but we understand that conflicts may arise. Program leaders can provide participants with meeting materials and information on missed meetings.

Meetings are scheduled at a variety of times. We currently have meetings taking place in the morning, midday, and evening.

Each meeting is approximately one hour long. Time is provided at the end of each meeting to ask questions.

Each group will have approximately 8 to 15 participants.

At the beginning of each meeting, participants answer questions about mood, physical health, and relationships. These answers are tracked over the week to monitor changes in the participants’ physical and emotional well-being.

Yes. Mood Lifters can be an excellent addition to your current mental health treatment. Just let us and your current provider know you are participating in both.

The cost depends on where you are participating in Mood Lifters. Anyone participating through a workplace program should check with their employer. For individuals who would like to sign up directly the cost is $50/month.

The vast majority of the research on peer leaders have shown that peer-led groups are as effective as professional lead groups. Further, Mood Lifters has tested peer-led against professional-led sessions and preliminary results support that there are no statistically significant differences between Mood Lifters groups led by professionals and Mood Lifters groups led by trained peers. Mood Lifters is a structured program developed by leading experts in the field and the program is based on cutting edge research and standardized across all leaders who are required to meet specific qualifications. Finally, group leaders always have an option to seek support from Mood Lifters professional staff for questions or issues that they feel are beyond their training.

“After a short amount of time, things began to turn around. I started to feel better about things. I felt more empowered and in control to guide my future in a direction that I wanted to head and one that I looked forward to. I’m now hopeful for a better future and have some tools to help me along the way. My marriage is better, my job is more rewarding, I’m taking pleasure in more of my day-to-day activities, my drinking has been curbed, and I’m truly happy to be here now.”

“In Mood Lifters, I learned some basic tenets that established themselves as the foundation for better thinking. These weren’t new techniques or different approaches, they were simple concepts and presented in an easy to understand format. Oh, and the setting… this wasn’t a counselor’s office either, it was with a group of average people, like me, who also shared the same experiences. Each week, we learned a different topic and then individually worked on activities that each topic provides. It’s not always easy work to do, but the meeting and the tracking that we do helps to keep us on task and to see measurable progress week after week.”
